UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

Which Stair Lift Is Right for Your Home?

A stair lift is a powered chair that carries a seated person up and down stairs along a rail. Different systems serve different routes and conditions, so a home with a straight flight may need a different solution from a curved staircase or outdoor steps.

Straight Stair Lifts

Designed for a continuous flight of stairs without turns. The rail generally follows the slope of the steps. Doorways, landing room and usable staircase width still affect suitability.

Curved Stair Lifts

Designed for stairs with corners, changes in direction, spiral turns or intermediate landings. The rail may be custom-made or assembled from a modular system to follow the route.

Indoor Stair Lifts

Made for indoor use and available in different seating, rail and control configurations. Features such as folding footrests, swivel seats and remote controls vary by model.

Outdoor Stair Lifts

Built specifically for suitable exterior staircases leading to a porch, deck or other entrance. An outdoor model needs weather-resistant components and a site-specific fit review; indoor-only models are not substitutes.

Harmar Pinnacle SL300 straight indoor stair lift
Harmar
300 lb Mfr. Rating

Harmar Pinnacle SL300

Indoor straight stair lift · 300 lb manufacturer-rated capacity

A compact stair lift for a suitable straight indoor flight. Harmar lists an 11-inch folded profile from the wall and a folding seat and footrest. That measurement describes the product when folded, not the minimum staircase width required for safe use.

Harmar Pinnacle SL600HD heavy-duty straight stair lift
Harmar
600 lb Mfr. Rating

Harmar Pinnacle SL600HD

Heavy-duty indoor straight stair lift · 600 lb manufacturer-rated capacity

A heavy-duty option with a wider seat, reinforced footrest and features intended for appropriate riders on straight indoor stairs. The higher rated capacity does not replace checks for seat comfort, transfer space or staircase clearance.

Harmar UP modular curved indoor stair lift
Harmar
275 lb Mfr. Rating

Harmar UP Stairlift

Modular indoor curved stair lift · 275 lb manufacturer-rated capacity

A modular-rail option designed for many indoor staircases with corners and landings. Harmar offers powered features such as a swivel seat and folding footrest on the UP; exact configuration and site suitability need confirmation.

Bruno Elan straight indoor stair lift
Bruno
300 lb Mfr. Rating

Bruno Elan

Indoor straight stair lift · 300 lb manufacturer-rated capacity

A straight stair lift with a narrow vertical rail intended to preserve open space on the steps. Bruno lists features such as an Easy-Turn seat, obstruction sensors and wireless remotes, with optional equipment depending on the configuration.

Bruno Elite curved indoor stair lift
Bruno
400 lb Mfr. Rating

Bruno Elite Curved Indoor

Indoor curved stair lift · 400 lb manufacturer-rated capacity

Designed with a rail shaped for the bends and landings of an indoor staircase. The Elite Curved offers model-dependent seat, swivel and footrest options for people comparing a tailored curved-rail solution.

Bruno Elite straight outdoor stair lift
Bruno
400 lb Mfr. Rating

Bruno Elite Straight Outdoor

Outdoor straight stair lift · 400 lb manufacturer-rated capacity

Designed for suitable straight exterior steps, with weather-resistant seat materials and rail components. This is an outdoor-rated example; equipment selection also depends on the staircase, exposure and access at the landings.

Product ratings and features above are manufacturer specifications, not proof of fit or current inventory. Total Access Mobility can discuss equipment choices, but model availability, rider suitability and installation eligibility must be confirmed for your home.

COMPARE YOUR OPTIONS

Straight, Curved or Outdoor: Which Stair Lift Fits?

Straight flight without turns

A straight rail may be appropriate where the stairs follow one continuous line. For example, Harmar's SL300 and Bruno's Elan are both 300 lb-rated indoor straight models, although their rail designs and feature options differ.

Turns, corners or intermediate landings

A curved solution follows the route rather than stopping at a bend. Harmar's UP is a 275 lb-rated modular curved example; Bruno's Elite Curved Indoor is a 400 lb-rated tailored-rail example. Compare the actual models and fit requirements, not just the brand names.

Exterior stairs

Outdoor stairs need a model designed for weather exposure and the specific entry route. Bruno's Elite Straight Outdoor is one example for straight exterior flights; a curved outdoor route requires its own product and site assessment.

Choosing between Harmar and Bruno is not about one brand being universally better. The important questions are rail fit, rated capacity, rider comfort, controls, available options and suitability for your staircase.

A stair lift carries someone sitting in the lift's own chair. If the person needs to stay in a wheelchair while moving between levels, a vertical platform lift may be the more relevant category to explore.

MEASURE THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

Five Things to Check Before Choosing a Stair Lift

01

Staircase shape

Is the route straight, curved, spiral or interrupted by a landing? Where will the lift start and stop?

02

Width and clearance

Measure the available space around steps, handrails, doors and upper and lower landings. Folded product width alone cannot establish whether the stairs are suitable.

03

Rider comfort and transfers

Consider the rider's weight, seat dimensions, knee and foot space, and ability to sit down, turn and stand safely at each landing.

04

Controls and backup operation

Compare seat belts, swivel seats, obstruction sensors, charging arrangements, battery-backed travel and folding features for the exact model.

05

Everyday household use

Think about other people sharing the stairs, pedestrian clearance, access to doors, the location of a power source and ongoing servicing.

Need help deciding what to measure? Tell us about your staircase and the person who will use the lift. A model and final installation plan should be based on actual site dimensions and manufacturer requirements.

Stair Lift Installation, Repair & Maintenance

Total Access Mobility offers stair lift installation, repairs, maintenance and inspections across Indiana. Whether you are choosing new equipment or need help with an existing stair lift, the first step is understanding the staircase, product and service request.

Request Stair Lift Service

What to Expect When Planning a Stair Lift

A typical stair lift planning conversation may involve describing the staircase and rider's needs, sharing photos or measurements, reviewing the available models and features, and confirming which further site checks are needed before a quote or installation. The exact sequence depends on the property and equipment.

For a new installation, the final rail layout, mounting, clearance, electrical needs and user instructions should follow the selected manufacturer's requirements.

What If Your Stair Lift Needs Service?

If an existing lift stops, makes an unusual noise, shows a warning or no longer operates normally, note its brand, model and what happened. Contact us to check whether we can help with that particular unit. Avoid attempting repairs or bypassing safety devices; follow the owner's manual if the lift is not operating as expected.

Service needs may involve controls, charging or battery performance, rail obstructions and other model-specific components. The correct diagnosis and maintenance schedule depend on the equipment; availability of parts and work on third-party units must be confirmed.

PLANNING YOUR INVESTMENT

How Much Does a Stair Lift Cost in Indiana?

The installed cost of a stair lift depends on the route, the equipment and the work required. A straight indoor rail and a staircase with multiple turns can involve very different measurements, rail configurations and installation requirements.

Factors that may affect a quote include rail length and bends, indoor or outdoor construction, rated capacity, the rider's seat and transfer needs, powered swivel or footrest options, site conditions and electrical provisions. Product warranties and service terms should be reviewed for the selected model.

We do not list a single installed price because homes and configurations differ. Request a free consultation to discuss your stairs and the information needed for a tailored quote.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stair Lifts

What is the difference between straight and curved stair lifts?

Straight stair lifts run along one continuous flight without turns. Curved stair lifts follow corners, bends or intermediate landings using a rail designed for the route.

Can a stair lift fit on a narrow staircase?

Sometimes, but stair width alone is not enough to decide. Rail position, space when the seat is occupied, door clearance and room to get on and off must be checked. A manufacturer's folded dimension is not a minimum installation width.

Does a stair lift mount to the wall or to the stairs?

Many models attach their rail brackets to the stair treads rather than the wall. The exact mounting arrangement depends on the model, staircase structure and manufacturer instructions.

Will a stair lift work if the power goes out?

Some battery-powered models can make a limited number of trips during an outage. Battery condition, charging setup and the model's instructions determine what is possible; do not assume every lift has the same backup capability.

Is Harmar or Bruno better for my staircase?

Compare specific models rather than choosing on the manufacturer name alone. For example, Harmar UP and Bruno Elite Curved Indoor have different rail approaches and rated capacities. Staircase geometry, user comfort, service suitability and actual available configurations matter more than a general brand ranking.

Can you install a stair lift on steps with a landing?

Often a curved or modular-rail design is considered if the route changes direction at a landing. The available space and rail path need to be measured before suitability can be confirmed.

Can an indoor stair lift be used outdoors?

No. Exterior stairs call for an outdoor-rated model and a site-specific review of weather exposure and mounting conditions.

What happens during a stair lift installation consultation?

Be ready to describe the staircase shape, approximate number of steps, nearby doors or landings, and the rider's needs. Photos and measurements may help narrow the options; final fit and installation details require the relevant site and product checks.

What if my stair lift stops working or starts beeping?

Note the model and any displayed warning, and consult the product's owner instructions. Do not force a lift, defeat sensors or attempt unsafe repairs. Contact Total Access Mobility with the details so we can review whether service is available for that unit.

Do you install, repair and maintain stair lifts in Indiana?

Yes. Total Access Mobility provides installation, repairs, maintenance and inspections. For an existing lift, tell us the brand, model and issue so we can confirm the work we support.

How do I get a stair lift quote?

Request a free consultation and share your location, whether the staircase is straight, curved or outdoors, and any size or access concerns. Equipment and installation recommendations depend on your home's needs.

What if the person needs to stay in a wheelchair?

A stair lift is typically used by someone who transfers into the lift's seat. A vertical platform lift may be a more relevant solution if the user must stay in a wheelchair, depending on the property.
