UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS

Which Vehicle Lift Is Right for You?

A vehicle lift is equipment designed to help transport a mobility scooter, power wheelchair or, with a suitable carrier, a manual wheelchair. The correct choice depends on the mobility device, the vehicle and how much effort you can comfortably manage when loading and unloading.

We can help you compare these common options:

01 / Exterior

Exterior and Hitch-Mounted Vehicle Lifts

An exterior lift carries a compatible mobility device behind the vehicle, helping preserve room inside. Some powered hitch-mounted lifts raise and lower the device with a switch; manual carriers use a ramp or another manual loading method. Vehicle hitch specifications, rated capacities, weight distribution and rear clearance all need careful review.

02 / Interior

Interior Vehicle Lifts

An interior lift moves a compatible scooter or wheelchair into the vehicle's cargo area. Enclosed transport can reduce exposure to weather, but it requires enough space inside the vehicle and sufficient opening clearance for the lift and mobility device.

03 / Hoist & Hybrid

Hoist and Hybrid Vehicle Lifts

A hoist-style lift helps raise a mobility device into a vehicle, while a hybrid lift generally combines a platform loading method with a mechanism that moves the equipment into the cargo area. These systems have different space, mounting and operating requirements. Compatibility must be confirmed for each vehicle and device.

04 / Manual Carriers

Manual Wheelchair and Scooter Carriers

Manual hitch-mounted carriers can be an option for certain scooters and wheelchairs when a powered lifting mechanism is not needed. They may require more physical effort or assistance to load and secure equipment, so loading ability matters just as much as carrying capacity.

COMPARE BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Inside or Outside? Powered or Manual?

Inside or outside?

An outside vehicle lift can preserve cargo space, but the equipment travels exposed to weather and may affect rear access or parking clearance. An inside lift protects equipment within the vehicle, but uses cargo space and needs a compatible opening and loading path.

Powered or manual?

A powered lift can reduce the work of lifting or lowering a mobility device; a manual carrier generally requires more hands-on loading. The best option is the one that suits your vehicle, mobility device, operating ability and daily routine.

Whether you can operate the lift independently or prefer a system requiring less physical handling.

How Much Does a Vehicle Lift Cost in Indiana?

The installed cost depends on the type of lift, the mobility device’s weight and size, the vehicle’s configuration, mounting or hitch requirements, accessories and installation needs. A manual carrier and a powered lift can involve very different equipment and labor requirements.

Because there is no single configuration that fits every vehicle and device, pricing is discussed based on your actual requirements. Request a free consultation to explore suitable options and the information needed for a quote.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Vehicle Lifts

Every vehicle and mobility device is different. Here are answers to common questions.

Can a scooter lift fit my SUV, car, van or pickup?

Potentially, depending on the vehicle and lift. The vehicle’s year, make and model, hitch or cargo specifications, lifting system and scooter dimensions all matter. No single vehicle lift is compatible with every vehicle.

Is a 350 lb or 400 lb lift suitable for my scooter?

The stated lifting capacity is only one part of the decision. Your scooter’s actual transport weight, platform dimensions, securement method, vehicle limits and the lift’s installed weight must also be evaluated. For example, Harmar rates the AL100 at 350 lb and AL100HD at 400 lb for scooter transport, subject to their product requirements.

Can the same carrier transport a scooter, power wheelchair and manual wheelchair?

Some manual carriers accommodate more than one device category. For example, Harmar describes its AL001 manual carrier as suitable for certain scooters, power wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs up to its stated capacity. Actual fit still depends on the device and vehicle.

Will a vehicle lift block the trunk, rear hatch or backup camera?

It can, depending on the lift and vehicle. Certain designs and accessories address access or visibility, but they are not universal solutions. Tell us how you use your rear hatch or cargo area before choosing a lift.

Do you provide installation and vehicle lift repair in Indiana?

Yes. Total Access Mobility provides installation, repair, maintenance and inspection services. For an existing product, contact us with its brand, model and service issue so we can confirm the work we can support.

Is a vehicle lift the same as a lift for entering a vehicle while seated in a wheelchair?

No. The vehicle lifts and carriers described here are primarily for transporting a mobility device. Equipment designed to lift a person while seated in a wheelchair is a different application with its own safety and compatibility requirements.

What should I have ready when requesting a vehicle lift quote?

If possible, provide your vehicle’s year, make and model; your scooter or wheelchair’s make, model and weight; whether you prefer inside or outside transport; and any concerns about rear access or loading effort. We can then discuss the next steps.
